About Alexander Hugo Bakker Korff

Few nineteenth-century Dutch painters mined the quiet corners of domestic life with quite the same patience. Working in the small-cabinet tradition revived by The Hague School circle, this Leiden-trained painter (1824-1882) built his reputation on intimate interior scenes - elderly sisters reading, sewing, or tending to one another in modest parlors crowded with the bric-a-brac of bourgeois Holland. His handling owes something to seventeenth-century genre masters like Dou and Metsu, but the mood is distinctly Victorian: tender, slightly melancholy, often touched with gentle humor. For viewers drawn to small paintings that reward close looking, his work offers a window into a vanished domestic world.
