About Frank Duveneck
Trained in Munich in the 1870s, he brought a dark, painterly bravura back to American art that left John Singer Sargent visibly impressed and Henry James writing about him with something close to awe. His brushwork is loose, his palette deep and earthy, and his portrait heads have the kind of psychological weight you associate more with Frans Hals than with Gilded Age America. A leader of the so-called Duveneck Boys in Munich and Venice, he taught a generation of painters before settling in Cincinnati. For collectors drawn to bold handling and genuine character study over polish, his work still reads as remarkably alive.
