About Rumold Mercator

The son of Gerard Mercator carried on the family cartographic business with a precision that defined late sixteenth-century mapmaking. Working from Duisburg, he completed and published his father's monumental Atlas after Gerard's death in 1594, and his own reduced world map of 1587 became one of the most circulated geographic images of its era. He worked in the Flemish engraving tradition, where decorative cartouches, sea monsters, and sailing ships shared space with genuine geographic ambition. His regional maps of the Low Countries remain the period's most legible record of a Europe still figuring out its own borders, and they read today as both document and design object.
