About Pedro Serra

Active in Barcelona during the late fourteenth century, this Catalan painter was one of the leading figures of the International Gothic style in the Iberian Peninsula. Working alongside his brother Jaume, he ran a busy workshop that produced devotional altarpieces for monasteries and cathedrals across Catalonia and Aragon, with the Mare de Déu dels Àngels among his most significant commissions. His Madonnas carry the delicate linearity and gilded backgrounds typical of the period, but with a softer, more humanised approach to the sacred figures. For collectors drawn to medieval devotional art, his panels offer a quieter, more contemplative alternative to the dramatic religious painting that came later.
