About Edwin Deakin

Few painters did more to fix the romantic image of California's crumbling Spanish missions than this English-born artist, who arrived in San Francisco in 1870 and spent decades documenting the chain of twenty-one missions in oil and watercolor. Trained in Britain before settling on the West Coast, he worked in a meticulous, atmospheric realism shaped by the European topographical tradition, often painting the missions in states of picturesque ruin just as preservation efforts were beginning. His mission paintings carry a particular quiet weight: part architectural record, part elegy for a vanishing California. They read today as some of the earliest serious visual histories of the American West.
