About Joseph Kleitsch

Hungarian-born and largely self-taught, this California Impressionist brought a richer, more saturated palette to the plein air tradition than most of his West Coast contemporaries. After arriving in America in 1901 and working as a society portraitist in Chicago and Mexico City, he settled in Laguna Beach in 1920, where he became central to the colony before its old-town character disappeared to development. His paintings of the San Juan Capistrano mission and the courtyards of Laguna are now treated as historical records as much as art. For a contemporary viewer, the appeal is the heat in the color - sun-baked walls, deep shadows, flowers pushed almost to vibration.
