About George De Forest

Few American painters worked harder at fusing Old Master technique with New World subject matter. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts under Jean-Léon Gérôme in the 1870s, Brush returned home and spent nearly a decade painting Native American life on the Wyoming and Montana plains, bringing an academic finish to subjects most of his contemporaries treated as ethnographic curiosity. By the 1890s he had pivoted to what became his signature theme: mother-and-child compositions modeled on Renaissance Madonnas, often featuring his own wife Mittie and their children. The result is quiet, secular devotional painting that still reads as deeply intimate more than a century on.
