About Michel Colombe

Working at the hinge between late Gothic and early Renaissance, this French sculptor (c. 1430–c. 1512) spent decades refining a quiet, deeply human style that helped carry Italian ideas into French stone. His finest surviving commission is the tomb of Francis II, Duke of Brittany, in Nantes Cathedral, completed around 1507 with the painter Jean Perréal and the Italian ornamentalist Girolamo da Fiesole. The four corner virtues—Fortitude, Justice, Prudence, Temperance—are the heart of it, each face composed, individual, alert. Studied closely today, these heads still read as portraits of character itself, which is precisely why they reward long looking on a wall.
