About Moran, Edward

Few nineteenth-century American painters knew the Atlantic seaboard quite like this Lancashire-born marine specialist, who emigrated to Philadelphia as a boy and built a career capturing harbors, clippers, and coastal commerce with documentary precision. Working from the 1850s onward, he became the eldest of the painting Moran brothers, with Thomas claiming the western landscapes while Edward took the water. His thirteen-canvas series chronicling American maritime history, completed in the 1890s, remains his signature achievement. The Delaware River scenes and harbor views have a working-vessel honesty to them, neither sentimental nor stiff, and they read beautifully in rooms that lean toward history, geography, or the slow weather of the coast.
