About Katsushika Oi

Daughter of Hokusai, and by many accounts the better painter of light in the family. Working in mid-nineteenth-century Edo, she developed a command of nocturnal scenes that was genuinely unusual for ukiyo-e, building interiors lit by lanterns and moonlight with a chiaroscuro closer to European painting than to her contemporaries. She is thought to have collaborated heavily on works credited to her aging father, and her independent paintings of women - musicians, courtesans, figures absorbed in quiet activity - carry a psychological weight rare in the genre. For viewers drawn to Japanese art but tired of the usual suspects, her work is a quiet revelation.
