About Edward Hicks

A Quaker minister who painted signs for a living and turned that flat, declarative folk-art style into something quietly radical. Working in Pennsylvania in the early nineteenth century, he returned again and again to the same biblical scene from Isaiah, lion lying with lamb, child among predators, producing more than sixty variations between the 1820s and his death in 1849. Each version reads as both sermon and personal reckoning with the divisions inside his own religious community. The appeal now is the directness: unfussy figures, plainspoken color, and a moral seriousness that gives American folk painting some of its strongest visual arguments.
