About Frank Charmichael

The youngest founding member of Canada's Group of Seven, Franklin Carmichael brought a quieter, more lyrical sensibility to a movement otherwise defined by bold gesture. Trained in Toronto and Antwerp, he worked alongside Tom Thomson and Lawren Harris in the years leading up to the Group's formation in 1920, developing a distinctive approach that favored watercolor at a time when his peers leaned heavily on oils. His Northern Ontario landscapes - the rolling country around La Cloche, the open skies of Georgian Bay - balance design and atmosphere with unusual restraint. For viewers drawn to the Canadian wilderness tradition without its occasional bombast, his work rewards close attention.
