About Gerard De Lairesse

Sometimes called the Dutch Poussin, this Liège-born painter brought a strict classical idealism to the late Golden Age, pushing against the looser Baroque tendencies of his Amsterdam contemporaries. Trained under his father and shaped by Rembrandt's circle early on, he eventually rejected that painterly warmth in favor of cool mythological allegory, crisp drawing, and theatrical staging drawn from French academic theory. After going blind in the 1690s, he turned to lecturing, producing the influential treatise Het Groot Schilderboek. His Bacchic scenes and biblical subjects appeal to viewers who want narrative ambition and classical poise rather than quiet domestic naturalism.
