About David Cox

Few English watercolourists pushed the medium toward atmosphere the way he did. Working from 1783 to 1859, he came up through the topographical tradition but spent his later career chasing weather, wind and the unsettled light of the Welsh hills, particularly around Bettws-y-Coed. His switch in the 1830s to a coarse, fibrous wrapping paper, now called Cox paper, let him work with a looser, almost blustery touch that anticipated the Impressionists by a generation. For a contemporary viewer, his landscapes still feel alive in a way most Victorian watercolours don't, more about a passing moment than a fixed view.
