About Thomas Alexander

Working in late nineteenth-century France alongside the Grez-sur-Loing colony, Thomas Alexander Harrison became one of the American expatriates who shaped plein-air painting at its most atmospheric. Born in Philadelphia in 1853 and trained at the Pennsylvania Academy before settling in France, he developed a quiet specialty in tonal landscapes and marine scenes, particularly the rivers and coasts where light dissolves into water. His subdued palette and feel for moisture-laden air earned him a Legion of Honour and the admiration of younger artists who passed through Grez. For a contemporary viewer, his work offers something increasingly rare: a painter who took genuine patience with weather.
