About Nicolaes Maes

One of Rembrandt's most gifted pupils, he trained in the master's Amsterdam studio in the late 1640s before returning to his native Dordrecht to find his own voice. The early genre scenes are what made his reputation: quiet domestic interiors of women sewing, praying, or eavesdropping on lovers, all built from the deep reds and warm shadows he had absorbed from Rembrandt. By the 1660s he had pivoted almost entirely to portraiture, producing elegant, fashionable likenesses for the Amsterdam merchant class until his death in 1693. The intimacy of those earlier domestic pictures still feels strikingly modern - a stillness that holds the room.
