Few portraitists captured the early American republic with the same swagger. Born in England in 1780 and raised in Philadelphia, he became New York's most sought-after portrait painter in the 1810s, turning out likenesses of merchants, military officers, and society figures with a directness that owed something to Gilbert Stuart but felt distinctly his own. His studio trained the next generation, including Henry Inman and Thomas Sully, both of whom apprenticed under him.
