Working primarily in the 1820s and 1830s, he traded the portrait conventions of his day for quiet river bends, misty middle distances, and solitary figures dwarfed by the natural world. Self-taught and originally trained as a leather currier in Philadelphia, he helped establish landscape as a serious subject for American painters, paving the way for Thomas Cole and the generation that followed.
