About Erinst Ludwig Kirchner

Few artists captured the nervous energy of early twentieth-century Germany with the raw intensity of this Dresden-trained painter, a founding member of Die Brücke in 1905. He pushed German Expressionism toward something jagged and psychologically charged: angular figures, acidic color, and that unmistakable hatched brushwork pulled from his obsessive study of woodcut. His Berlin street scenes from 1913 to 1915 remain the high-water mark of the movement, all sharp elbows and electric anxiety. For a contemporary viewer, his work still reads as startlingly modern. The flattened space, the unease, the refusal to prettify the human figure - it feels closer to now than to a century ago.
