About Millet, Jean Francois

Few painters did more to dignify rural labor than this founding member of the Barbizon School, the loose circle of French landscapists who decamped from Paris to the forest of Fontainebleau in the 1840s. Working from peasant life he had known since childhood in Normandy, he gave shepherds, gleaners, and sowers the gravity usually reserved for biblical or mythological figures. The Gleaners and The Angelus, both from the 1850s, drew accusations of socialism at the Salon and later moved Van Gogh to copy him obsessively. The pictures still read as quietly radical today: ordinary people, rendered with the seriousness most artists saved for kings.
