About Michael Zeno Diemer

Few painters knew the moods of the open ocean quite like this Munich-born marine specialist (1867-1939), who trained under Karl Raupp at the Academy of Fine Arts and built a career rendering steamships, sailing vessels and naval scenes with near-documentary precision. He worked at the tail end of the great age of sail, when ocean liners were beginning to displace the windjammers, and his canvases preserve both with equal care - rigging, hull lines and the particular weight of Atlantic swell all rendered from close observation. For collectors drawn to maritime history, his paintings offer something rarer than romance: an eyewitness account of ships under weather.
