About Theodore Gericault

Few painters dragged French art out of Neoclassical restraint with the force of this short-lived Romantic. Working in the 1810s and early 1820s, he traded marble-cool composure for raw musculature, restless horses, and the unflinching study of human extremity - culminating in The Raft of the Medusa, a contemporary shipwreck painted as history. He drew obsessively from life, dissecting cadavers and sketching asylum patients with the same seriousness he brought to thoroughbreds. Delacroix took notes; nearly every Romantic who followed owed him something. For modern viewers, his work still reads as urgent and physical - studies of bodies and animals caught mid-thought, not posed for posterity.
