About Floris Claesz Van Dyck

Among the first Dutch painters to treat the breakfast piece as a serious genre, this Haarlem master helped define what we now call the monochrome banketje, or banquet still life. Working in the early decades of the seventeenth century, he arranged cheeses, fruit, and pewter on crisp damask with an almost architectural sense of geometry, each object given room to breathe rather than crowded for abundance. He belonged to the Haarlem guild alongside Nicolaes Gillis and Floris van Schooten, and his measured compositions paved the way for Pieter Claesz and Willem Heda. The result still reads as remarkably modern: quiet, structured, and quietly luxurious.
