About Jan Davidsz De Heem

Few painters bridged Dutch restraint and Flemish opulence as fluently as this seventeenth-century master of the still life. Born in Utrecht in 1606 and trained in Leiden, he moved to Antwerp in 1636, where the lush, theatrical still lifes of Daniel Seghers and the Flemish school transformed his cooler northern sensibility into something far more sumptuous. The pronkstilleven, or "ostentatious still life," found its definitive voice in his hands - heaped fruit, curling lemon peels, glassware catching the light, the occasional lobster. What keeps these compositions alive on the wall four centuries later is their sheer attentiveness: every petal, peel, and reflection observed with patience modern eyes rarely afford.
