About Louis Marcoussis

Born Ludwik Markus in Warsaw in 1878, this Polish-French painter and printmaker became one of the quieter but more inventive figures in the Cubist circle that gathered around Picasso and Braque in pre-war Paris. Apollinaire suggested the pseudonym, borrowed from the village of Marcoussis, and the name stuck. His real gift was for etching and drypoint, where Cubism's fractured planes translated into something more linear, lyrical, and strangely intimate than the movement's painted output usually allowed. For contemporary viewers, his prints offer a way into early modernism that feels playful rather than theoretical - the geometry softened by a draftsman's hand and a poet's sensibility.
