About John William Waterhouse

Working in late Victorian England, he arrived at Pre-Raphaelitism a generation after its founders, which gave his paintings a curious in-between quality: the literary subjects and jewel-toned palette of Rossetti and Burne-Jones, filtered through the looser brushwork he'd absorbed from French plein-air painting. Born in 1849 to artist parents in Rome, he made his name with scenes drawn from Tennyson, Shakespeare, Ovid and Greek myth, populated by watchful, self-possessed women who feel psychologically modern despite their medieval trappings. More than a century on, his work still rewards slow looking - narrative paintings that hold their secrets rather than spelling them out.
