About Tadeusz Makowski

Few painters built an entire visual language out of childhood the way this Polish émigré did. Working in Paris from 1908 until his death in 1932, he absorbed Cubism directly from its source - Le Fauconnier was an early mentor - then quietly turned its geometry inward, using faceted planes to render the round faces, button eyes and solemn expressions of village children. The mature paintings from the late 1920s have a wooden, almost puppet-like stillness that feels closer to folk carving than to the School of Paris around him. For collectors today, the appeal is that strange tenderness: modernist structure carrying the weight of something much older and more melancholic.
