About Carolus Duran

Few nineteenth-century portraitists understood the language of black quite like this French painter, who turned a Velázquez obsession into one of the most influential teaching studios in Paris. Born in Lille in 1837, he built his reputation on society portraits that swapped academic stiffness for loose, confident brushwork and a Spanish sense of drama. His atelier shaped a generation of expatriate Americans, John Singer Sargent chief among them, and the family's debt to the master is written all over Sargent's mature style. The portraits hold up because they treat sitters as people first, costume second, a quality contemporary collectors still respond to.
