About Maurice Quentin De La Tour

Few eighteenth-century portraitists understood a face the way this one did. Working almost exclusively in pastel, the French artist (1704–1788) became the favored chronicler of Enlightenment Paris, capturing Voltaire's wit, Rousseau's restlessness, and the calculated poise of Madame de Pompadour with a psychological sharpness that set him apart from his contemporaries. He was a fixture at the Salon and a member of the Académie Royale, and his preparatory studies — what he called his "préparations" — are now considered among the finest pastel work ever made. What lingers in his portraits is the sitter's intelligence. These are people caught mid-thought, alert and entirely present.
