About Philip Alexius De Laszlo

Born in Budapest in 1869, he became the society portraitist of his era, the painter aristocrats and presidents sat for once John Singer Sargent had stepped back from commissions. Trained in Munich and Paris, he developed a fluent, quick-handed style that could catch a sitter's bearing in a few sittings - silks rendered in confident sweeps, faces modeled with restrained psychological warmth. By the 1920s his subjects ranged from European royalty to American industrialists and their wives. What makes his portraits hold up now is their unfussed elegance: poised without stiffness, flattering without flattening. They carry the social weight of the Edwardian world into rooms that need a little gravity.
