About John Trumbull

Few painters had a closer view of the American Revolution than this Connecticut-born artist, who served briefly as an aide-de-camp to George Washington before turning that proximity into a career. Trained in London under Benjamin West in the 1780s, he set out to document the new republic's founding moments in paint, producing the large historical scenes that still hang in the Capitol Rotunda. Alongside those grand commissions, he kept a steady practice in portraiture, capturing the merchants, officers, and families of the early Federal era.
