About Christian Rohlfs

Few artists made the leap from nineteenth-century naturalism to full-blown Expressionism as completely as this one did. Born in 1849, he spent his early career as a competent landscape painter in the academic tradition, then radically reinvented himself in his sixties after encountering the work of Munch, Nolde, and the Brücke painters. By the 1910s he was producing woodcuts and watercolors of saturated, almost dissolving color, working into the paint with rags and his fingers to break the surface apart. The Nazis declared him degenerate in 1937, the year before his death at eighty-eight. His late work still feels urgent: loose, luminous, and unembarrassed by feeling.
