About John Frederick Lewis

Few British painters of the nineteenth century saw the Islamic world as closely as this one did. After a decade living in Cairo from 1841, he returned to London with sketchbooks full of latticed light, embroidered textiles, and quiet domestic interiors that he would spend the rest of his life translating into astonishingly detailed watercolours and oils. Ruskin championed him; the Orientalist label has followed him ever since, though his patience with ornament and his eye for cool, filtered sunlight set him apart from the genre's louder voices. For contemporary viewers, his work rewards slow looking - every fold and tile holds its place.
