About William James Glackens

One of the founding members of The Eight, the 1908 group that pushed American painting away from polite academic taste, this Philadelphia-born artist began as a newspaper illustrator before turning fully to painting. His early work shared the dark palette and street-life subjects of the Ashcan School, but a 1912 buying trip to Paris for his friend Albert Barnes changed everything. He returned in love with Renoir, and the rest of his career unfolded in warm, high-keyed color: women in interiors, flowers, beach scenes, nudes built from luminous pinks and reds. For anyone drawn to early modern American painting with French warmth at its core, the appeal is immediate.
