About Charles Joseph Natoire

Among the second generation of French Rococo painters, this Nîmes-born artist (1700-1777) carved out a position somewhere between Boucher's confectionery and the sterner classicism that would follow. He won the Prix de Rome in 1721, ran the French Academy in Rome from 1751 onward, and became known for the Histoire de Psyché cycle at the Hôtel de Soubise - a benchmark of mid-century decorative painting in Paris. His drawings, in particular, show a draftsman's discipline beneath the pastel mythologies. For collectors drawn to the lighter side of the eighteenth century without losing intellectual rigor, his work sits in an interesting middle ground.
