About Carlo Dolci

Few painters polished a surface like this seventeenth-century Florentine, whose devotional pictures were finished to such a high enamel-like sheen that contemporaries marveled at how slowly he worked. A leading figure of the Florentine Baroque, born in 1616 and active until his death in 1686, he specialized in tender religious subjects and half-length saints painted with jewel-bright color and an almost trance-like attention to detail. He was court painter to the Medici, and his sweet, melancholy Madonnas were copied and collected across Catholic Europe for centuries. For modern viewers, his work offers the rare pleasure of looking closely and being rewarded each time.
