About Henri Leopold Levy

A nineteenth-century French history painter trained in the grand academic tradition, he studied under Picot, Cabanel, and Fromentin at the École des Beaux-Arts, absorbing the polished draftsmanship and theatrical composition that defined the Salon at its peak. Born in Nancy in 1840, he built his reputation on large biblical and historical canvases, eventually earning commissions for the Panthéon in Paris.
