About Jean Baptiste Edouard Detaille

Few painters have documented military life with the forensic precision of this nineteenth-century Frenchman, who trained under Ernest Meissonier and inherited his master's obsession with getting every button, buckle, and bridle exactly right. Born in 1848, he came of age during the Franco-Prussian War, and that conflict shaped much of his career—he sketched soldiers from life, studied uniforms in the field, and turned what he saw into paintings that hover between reportage and history. For a contemporary viewer, his cavalrymen and infantry studies offer something rare: military art made by someone who clearly preferred the texture of a worn greatcoat to the glamour of victory.
