About Jack Spurling

Few painters understood the late age of sail with the precision of this British marine artist, who worked from the 1880s into the 1930s as the great clippers were vanishing from the trade routes he had once sailed himself. A former merchant seaman turned painter, he became the house artist for Lloyd's Calendar, producing annual ship portraits that combined draftsman-level rigging accuracy with a genuine eye for weather and water. His clippers heel correctly, his sails fill the way canvas actually fills.
