About Jean Paul Laurens

Among the last serious practitioners of French academic history painting, he built his career on grim, meticulously researched scenes from the Merovingian past, the medieval church, and the bloodier corners of French political history. Born in 1838 in the Haute-Garonne, he trained under Léon Cogniet and went on to teach at the Académie Julian, where his students included Henri Matisse. His staunch republican and anticlerical politics gave his historical subjects a sharper edge than his academic peers managed, and the Pantheon and Toulouse Capitole still carry his murals. For collectors drawn to narrative painting with weight, his work delivers a kind of dark intelligence rarely matched in the period.
