About Cristobal Rojas Poleo

One of the great nineteenth-century Venezuelan painters, he stands alongside Arturo Michelena and Martín Tovar y Tovar as a defining figure of his country's academic tradition. Born in Cúa in 1858, he trained in Caracas before winning a state scholarship to Paris, where he absorbed the sober realism of the French academy and the social conscience of artists like Jean-François Millet. His mature work turned away from heroic historical scenes toward quiet, unflinching studies of poverty, illness, and grief - he himself was dying of tuberculosis by his early thirties. The result is painting of unusual emotional weight, modern in its sympathy for ordinary suffering and remarkably direct for a contemporary viewer.
