About Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale

Among the last true Pre-Raphaelites, she carried the movement's jewel-toned medievalism into the twentieth century when most of her contemporaries had moved on to looser, more modern idioms. Born in 1872, she trained at the Royal Academy Schools and built her reputation illustrating Tennyson, Browning, and Christina Rossetti, working in both oil and a meticulous watercolour technique that owed much to Burne-Jones and Millais. She was also the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours. For viewers drawn to narrative painting, literary romance, and saturated colour handled with real draughtsmanship, her work remains quietly rewarding.
