About Arthur Hughes

Among the second wave of Pre-Raphaelites, he brought a softer, more lyrical sensibility to the movement's exacting realism. Working in mid-Victorian England from the 1850s onward, he absorbed the hard-edged naturalism of Millais and Rossetti but pushed it toward something more wistful, favouring lovers, partings, and quiet woodland scenes lit by his signature lilacs, violets, and dusky greens. April Love and Home from Sea made his reputation; he later illustrated Christina Rossetti and George MacDonald with the same delicate touch. For viewers drawn to narrative paintings that linger on tenderness rather than drama, his work remains some of the most quietly affecting of the period.
