About Anne Louis Girodet Trioson

A pupil of David who broke with his teacher's austere Neoclassicism almost as soon as he mastered it, this French painter (1767-1824) is the strange bridge between Davidian rigor and full-blown Romanticism. His Sleep of Endymion, shown at the Salon of 1793, replaced heroic clarity with moonlit eroticism and dissolving contours, and he spent the rest of his career pushing paint toward dream, literature, and Ossianic mist. He illustrated Virgil and Chateaubriand with equal seriousness. For viewers today, his work offers something rare in late eighteenth-century art: classical training in service of mood, sensuality, and a distinctly modern strangeness.
