About Fredrich Overbeck

Few painters set out to reform an entire tradition by moving to Rome and growing their hair long, but that's essentially what happened in 1810 when a small group of German art students decamped to a disused monastery on the Pincian Hill. As a founding member of the Nazarenes, Overbeck (1789-1869) sought to recover the spiritual clarity of late medieval and early Renaissance painting, particularly Perugino and the young Raphael. His portrait of fellow Nazarene Franz Pforr is among the movement's defining images. For collectors drawn to devotional stillness, clean line, and the quiet intensity of pre-Raphaelite sensibility before the English Pre-Raphaelites existed, his work remains essential.
