About Irving Ramsey Wiles

Trained first by his father Lemuel and later under William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League, this American painter built his reputation on a fluid, alla prima brushwork that bridged late nineteenth-century realism and the looser handling of American Impressionism. Born in 1861 in Utica, New York, he became known for society portraits and for the breezy plein-air scenes he painted around Peconic, Long Island, where he summered for decades. He won a National Academy gold medal in 1889 and served as the Academy's president in the 1930s. His coastal work in particular still reads as remarkably modern - light-struck, casual, alive.
