About Otto Mueller

Among the German Expressionists, he was the quiet one - less jagged than Kirchner, less feverish than Nolde, drawn instead to a kind of melancholy stillness. Born in 1874 in Silesia, he joined Die Brücke in 1910 and stayed loyal to its bohemian ethos long after the group dissolved. His signature subject was the nude in a landscape, rendered in matte distemper on coarse canvas that gave his figures the dry, fresco-like surface he loved in Egyptian tomb painting. The result feels pagan and modern at once. For a contemporary room, his work brings the rare combination of primitivist edge and genuine tenderness.
