About Josep Masana

Few photographers caught the soft drama of interwar Spain quite like this Catalan pictorialist, working out of Barcelona in the 1920s and 30s when the medium was still arguing with itself about whether it counted as art. He leaned firmly into the painterly side, using bromoil and pigment processes to coax velvety tonalities and atmospheric edges from portraits, nudes, and studies of Spanish types in regional dress. His sensibility sits comfortably alongside contemporaries like Ortiz Echagüe, romantic without tipping into kitsch. For collectors drawn to vintage European photography with real craft behind it, his images carry the warmth of handwork the digital era can't replicate.
