About Thure De Thulstrup

Swedish-born and military-trained, this illustrator brought a soldier's eye for accuracy to American historical scenes at the height of the wood-engraved magazine era. After emigrating in the 1870s, he became one of Harper's Weekly's principal staff artists, working alongside Frederic Remington and Winslow Homer and producing some of the most widely reproduced Civil War battle scenes of the late nineteenth century. His chromolithographs of Gettysburg, Shiloh, and the Grant campaigns shaped how generations of Americans pictured the war itself. For viewers drawn to period military art, his work offers something documentary photography could not: composition, color, and the disciplined drama of a trained observer reconstructing history.
