About Adolphe Braun

Few photographers did more to legitimize the medium in the nineteenth century. Trained as a textile designer in Mulhouse, he turned to photography in the 1850s and built one of Europe's largest photographic firms, producing meticulously printed views of Alpine landscapes, Egyptian monuments, Parisian architecture, and reproductions of Old Master drawings for the Louvre and elsewhere. His carbon printing process, patented in 1866, gave his images a permanence rivals couldn't match, and his alpine work shaped how Europeans pictured the mountains for generations. For a contemporary viewer, his photographs offer something rare: documentary clarity married to a draftsman's eye for composition.
